Routledge release latest book on sex and porn addiction

I’m delighted to announce that last week Routledge released the 2nd Edition of Understanding & Treating Sex & Pornography Addiction, written by myself.

Since I wrote the first edition in 2012, there have been considerable changes in the field of sex and porn addiction. Most notably, the World Health Organisation’s recent decision to include Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD) in ICD-11 which is due to be adopted at the World Health Assembly in May 2019. What this heralds, finally, is that professionals are recognising how widespread compulsive sexual behaviour is and how it is damaging people’s lives. The exact ‘name’ of the condition may still be open to debate, but the fact that this is a mental health problem that we need to address is no longer in question.

This new edition has been updated throughout with new material covering pornography addiction, ChemSex, internet offending and female sex and love addiction.  I hope you’ll find that like my previous book, it has been written in a clear and informative manner and it contains support and advice for both the clinician and for those who suffer from sex and porn addiction, and provides tools for securing confident and rewarding recovery.

The neuroscience of sex and porn addiction forms a key element of this book and I was so fortunate to be able to collaborate with Gary Wilson of www.yourbrainonporn.com to ensure that the detail is accurate and up to date. You’ll also find that I’ve drawn more widely from other therapeutic approaches including CBT, ACT and positive psychology and there’s much greater reference to the wisdom and experience of the 12-Steps.

New Recovery Model

The most significant change in this 2nd edition is the inclusion of a new integrative recovery model which I have called the CHOICE Recovery Model. This model is more than just a structure treatment plan, it’s a philosophy; it’s not simply a strategy for stopping compulsive behaviours and enduring reluctant sobriety, but a roadmap to establish confident recovery and change your life. The acrostic CHOICE stands for:-

C – Challenge Core Beliefs

H – Have a Vision

O – Overcome Compulsive Behaviours

I – Identify Positive Sexuality

C – Connect with Others

E – Establish Confident Recovery

Over the coming weeks we will look at each of these 6 key areas of recovery and how they relate to sex addiction and porn addiction.
